The car entered production on Wednesday the 11th May 1988 and was completed seven days later on the 18th May 1988.The car was trucked to the UK-one of just 91 UK examples, of which currently, just 59 remain – to Maranello Concessionaires Ltd and in turn invoiced to Maranello Sales to whom it was registered F721 MPB on the 1st August 1988.Finished in the classic Rosso Corsa (Fer 300/9) with beige hide VM 3218 and dark red carpets. In addition to the then list price of £48,101.62 plus delivery, number plates and road tax. Being one of the last examples of the Mondial 3.2, the car was also fitted with anti-lock braking (ABS), which was by now standard equipment and a factory electric sunroof at £1,127.48
The car was purchased a three months later on the 17th November 1988 by 60-year-old chartered surveyor, Mr Eric D of South East London who part exchanged his 1981 Mondial 8 #37979(which had replaced a 1977 308 GT4 #13872.) The car was registered to his company in London. Upon his retirement the car was re-registered into his own name on the 21st May 1998 thus technically adding a third owner. The car was registered to his son 38-year-old son, James on the 12th October 1998 with some 16,700 miles.
The car is complete as new with factory original service book, hand-book wallet and tools, as well as past invoices and 16 MOT certificates. The car also has had the very rare four-piece set of Schedoni fitted luggage, a £1065 option when new. New Michelin TRX tyres were fitted within a few hundred miles. Maintenance initially by Maranello Concessionaires and Sales and more recently by the respected former Maranello Concessionaires mechanic, Vince Mezzullo.
The new 3.2 version of the Mondial offered a more powerful and flexible V8 that
significantly improved the car’s performance. New, more efficient and elegant light clusters, a
more ergonomic interior and better fit and finish completed the profile of this 2+2. It was comfortable and spacious, and offered excellent visibility for a car in its category.
The Mondial 3.2 model succeeded the Mondial Quattrovalvole, and was available in both coupe and cabriolet form, being announced concurrently with the 328 series of 2 seat models at the 1985 Frankfurt Salon. The 3.2 in the model title referred purely to the cubic capacity of the engine in litres. When necessary, the 3.2 could turn in the kind of dynamic performance expected of a thoroughbred Ferrari.
This model saw the first change in the body styling, with revised front and rear ends incorporating smooth body colour bumper assemblies, and a radiator grille with front light and radiator grille assemblies that mirrored those of the 328 cousin. These revisions had the effect of producing a more instantly recognisable homogeneous range of eight cylinder models in the Ferrari catalogue.
The body shape remained otherwise unaltered from its predecessor, although once again the interior detailing was revamped, the most noticeable being angled top corners to the instrument nacelle.
A leather dashboard and/or headlining was available as an option.
The five spoke road wheel pattern changed from a flat spoke design to a convex spoke layout to accommodate negative offset suspension geometry for the ABS braking system.This resulted in an increase of 25mm and 50mm respectively, in the front and rear track.
ENGINE AND CHASSIS
The main European market Mondial 3.2 coupé models had a tubular chassis with factory type reference F 108 CL 100, which featured a bolted rear sub-frame section, so that the complete engine, transmission and rear suspension assembly could be removed as a single unit, for ease of maintenance (Not necessary for servicing including cam-belt or clutch replacement).
The V8 engine of the Mondial 3.2 was basically the same design as that used in the Mondial Quattrovalvole model, but fitted with Bosch K Jetronic fuel injection and Marelli MED 806A Microplex electronic ignition to produce a claimed 270bhp at 7000rpm for main European market models, and 260bhp for US market models. It was of a 90 degree configuration, with belt driven twin overhead camshafts per bank, having a total capacity of 3185cc, with a bore and stroke of 83mm x 73mm, bearing factory type reference F 105 C 000 for European market cars.
The engine was transversely mounted in unit with the all synchromesh five speed transmission assembly, which was below, and to the rear of the engine’s wet sump.
As with the concurrent 2 seater models right and left hand drive was available, together with various world market specification models.
From chassis number 75000, odd and even numbers were used for the road production cars, and Mondial 3.2 model production spanned this figure thus they have odd numbers up to this figure, and odd and even above it.
The model was produced in a total of 987 units from 1985 to 1989, in the chassis number range 58277 to 79671.
